1. Silicon-manganese alloy is composed of manganese, silicon, iron, and a small amount of carbon, and is a widely used ferroalloy product. During the deoxidation process in steelmaking, the deoxidation products MnSiO3 and Mn2SiO4 produced by silicon-manganese alloy have melting points of 1270℃ and 1327℃ respectively, and are characterized by low melting points, large particle size, easy flotation, and good deoxidation effect. When manganese or silicon is used alone for deoxidation, the burn-off rate is 46% and 37% respectively, while using silicon-manganese alloy can reduce the burn-off rate of both to 29%.


2. Silicon-manganese alloys are widely used in the steelmaking field, and their production growth rate exceeds the average level of ferroalloys. They have become an indispensable composite deoxidizer and alloying additive in the steel industry. Silicon-manganese alloys with a carbon content of less than 1.9% can also be used as intermediate products in the production of low-carbon ferromanganese and metallic manganese by the silicothermic process.

Production Process

Silicon manganese alloy is produced by reducing manganese oxide and silicon dioxide in manganese ore with coke in a carbide furnace. The smelting process uses carbonaceous reducing agents, manganese ore, manganese-rich slag, sintered manganese ore, roasted manganese ore, and silica as raw materials, and lime, dolomite, fluorite, etc., as fluxes, in a continuous process in an electric furnace.


Currently, mainstream silicon manganese production enterprises are developing electric furnaces towards larger scale and full enclosure. To ensure product quality, the iron-manganese ratio and manganese-phosphorus ratio in the manganese ore must meet specific requirements; the higher the manganese content, the better the various indicators.


The main processes for producing ferrosilicon manganese include:
